A Taste of Scottish Heritage

Scottish Tablet undoubtedly holds a special place in the hearts and homes of Scotland. With its rich history and unique texture, this traditional treat is more than just a sweet treat—it's a symbol of Scottish culture and hospitality.

The Origins of Scottish Tablet

Scottish Tablet dates back to the early 18th century, making it one of Scotland's oldest and most cherished sweets. Its origins can be traced to the kitchens of Scottish homes, where it was lovingly prepared for special occasions and family gatherings. Unlike fudge, which is soft and chewy, tablet boasts a firm and grainy texture that melts in your mouth.  It offers a sweet, buttery flavor that is truly irresistible & unique.

A Simple Recipe with Deep Roots

The classic recipe for Scottish Tablet includes sugar, condensed milk, and butter, cooked together until it reaches a caramel-like consistency. The mixture is then poured into a tray to set and cut into bite-sized pieces. This straightforward combination of ingredients belies the depth of flavor and satisfaction it delivers.

Traditionally, tablet was made using a heavy pot over an open fire, requiring skill and patience to achieve the perfect consistency. Today, while the method has modernized in some ways with tools and equipment, the patience and skills required to create a proper tablet remains the same.

In fact, at Brown's English Toffee, we continue the tradition of making our Scottish Tablet using a wooden spoon, and only making it in small batches.  This ensures we are able to make a tablet that you would find in a Scottish home kitchen.

Scottish Tablet is more than just a treat; it is an integral part of Scottish heritage. It is often enjoyed during festive celebrations such as Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) and Burns Night, honoring Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns. It also holds a place of pride at weddings, christenings, and other family gatherings, where it is shared as a gesture of love and goodwill.

In Scotland, the art of making tablet is often passed down through generations, with family recipes being closely guarded secrets. This tradition not only keeps the sweet alive but also strengthens familial bonds and connects Scots to their cultural roots.
